Martyrs for March 9

Martyrs for March 9

My mother always made martyrs in the house, from flour with salt and water, she kneaded an elastic dough, she spread it with the facalet and then with a special device, in the shape of the number 8, she cut the martyrs. He then put them in the tray and dried them in the oven

Bring the water to a boil with the sugar, and when it boils, add the martyrs and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Then turn off the heat and cover the pot with a lid and allow to cool completely.

The flavors are added only when the syrup is cold, add rum, vanilla essence, vanilla sugar, lemon peel (and orange, optional). Cinnamon and walnuts are placed on a plate when serving, otherwise the syrup is bitter.

But if it thunders during the day, it is a good sign: a favorable summer will follow, and the harvests will be higher than the households hope.

Moldovan martyrs, traditional recipe with fasting dough

Moldovan fasting martyrs with walnuts, a recipe that I make so dearly, every year, during Lent. I was no more than 10 years old when I first tasted these martyrs made by a neighbor from the blog. It cooked wonderfully, as do all housewives in Moldova, and the martyrs were a dream! So fluffy and tasty, a novelty for us, children from Muntenia, where boiled Muntenian martyrs are made. After much insistence, my mother obtained the recipe for saints, that's what our neighbor called them, and since then, in addition to the boiled ones, we also had a portion of fluffy martyrs made of dough, baked in the oven and dressed in honey and walnuts.

When are Moldovan martyrs made?

Every year, on March 9, is the Feast of the 40 Martyrs of Sevastia. In Moldova, in honor of this holiday, 40 named rolls are being prepared saints, brados or martyrs. Moldovan grinders have the shape of the number 8 and are made of cake, fasting or sweet dough, greased with honey and powdered abundantly with walnuts.

Last year I made martyrs from Muntenia, my husband adores them, but this year I said to make the recipe for Moldovan saints with walnuts and honey. I felt good that I made this decision because I am wonderfully fluffy and I remember my childhood. The recipe for martyr's rolls is not complicated at all and, if you have fans around, they will be delighted to form martyrs.

The dough of the Moldavian martyrs is fasting, I greased a part of them with yolk, for those who tasted them and do not fast, and a part with soy milk. They are just as fluffy and delicious in both variants.

Since March 9, I have been eating martyrs from La Gospodina

Today I was talking to a friend about martyrs, because we were both looking forward to March 9th. The interesting thing is that we 2 are the biggest fans of martyrs we know. Unfortunately, I didn't get to tell him that since March 9, I ate martyrs from La Gospodina because he proudly told me that he bought from the supermarket, and I hung up the phone.

I'm not a fan of the idea of buying food from the supermarket that has been made for years according to special recipes. I know that not everyone has their parents or a relative around to make them martyrs, cakes or pies and somehow I feel sorry for them that they don't have a housewife in their neighborhood. As we are lucky here.

At the Housewife in New Bucharest

Ever since I discovered the La Gospodina catering service in New Bucharest, I don't think there will be a big holiday, like March 9, and I won't indulge in martyrs from them.

Today I arrived home with 2 generous portions of Wallachian martyrs and another 2 of Moldavian martyrs. I can't tell you much about my joy and that of my girlfriend because I didn't spend too much time with the martyrs on the table.

Instead, I can tell you that as soon as we removed the lids of the containers, an odor struck us, which we enjoyed for good seconds. We were sure that what we had in front of us was good because we liked what we saw and how it smelled.

I also shivered because I instantly remembered the childhood and the martyrs of Wallachia that my great-grandmother used to make. And I ate Moldovan martyrs a few years ago somewhere in Moldova. I ate at least 5 servings, until I refused. Yes, housewife he managed to bring back those memories to me.

From what I understand, the martyrs she made are according to her own recipe. How honest they were, I'm honestly not surprised.

Will follow…

I understood that La Gospodina will be followed by some special Easter goodies. This can be a good idea for those who do not go to relatives and do not want to buy traditional packaged Easter dishes from supermarkets.

He already has a list of dishes that he will have for sale during Easter. I promise to come back with a full list article.
